Museo Civico Luigi Rossi Danielli
The Civic Museum of Viterbo, located a short distance from the city walls, opened its doors in 1912. Initially, the works were displayed in the Church of Santa Maria della Verità, but when the church was reopened for worship in 1955, they were moved to the spaces of the convent where they can still be seen today. The museum is named after Viterbo archaeologist Luigi Rossi Danielli. Visitors are greeted by the striking Gothic cloister, adorned with precious Etruscan sarcophagi, with a well from the destroyed monastic complex of St. Augustine in the center.
On the ground floor are the fake relics created by Friar Annio da Viterbo, the sarcophagus of Galiana, and the Luigi Rossi Danielli collection. The tour continues to the second floor, where medieval paintings and sculptures are displayed, along with works from the modern age. The top level houses a gallery of 18th-century portraits and historical documents of the city, such as 19th-century plans of the Macchina di Santa Rosa and photogravures of the city of Viterbo.
